Wags for Wishes

July 6, 7, 8  2007

The world famous
Make-A-Wish Foundation, based in
San Diego, California, has presented a
special kind of dog show for five years
now that benefits the Foundation's
mission to grant wishes to terminally
ill children. This comprehensive dog
show, called Wags for Wishes, offers
every kind of venue and event for show quality, performance quality, and pet quality dogs. You name it – it happens at Wags for Wishes: agility, conformation, disk catching, dock jumping, herding, flyball, lure coursing, obedience, and terrier events.

The show, held at the Del Mar Horse Park, also offers a treasure trove in the special Vendor Village area. It was there that Bob and Laddie and good friend Jon Provost were invited to set up shop as this year's special guests. (Last year, the special guest was Cesar Milan.)

Bob, Laddie, and Jon were lucky to have their spot for a number of reasons. A refreshing breeze always seemed to blow past whenever the sun heated the day too much. A lovely large planter with a beautiful tree was directly behind the booth – a perfect place for taking once-in-a-lifetime photos with Laddie and Jon. Occasionally Bob was asked to be in a photo too. Then the photographer had to do double duty – not only picking just the right moment to capture a fabulous portrait but also making sure Laddie knew he'd be getting some delicious chicken at the end of the shoot!

Last but not least, their booth space seemed larger than any other because the fourth side separating the booth from the next was removed. Our neighbor was a talented young woman who ran the Tigertail Foods treat booth and also operates her own local pet sitting service (Carefree Companions). Lindsey McPherson, boyfriend Bobby and her mother Shirley all helped out tremendously from setting up the booth to baby-sitting Laddie's best friend Throttle.

The Weatherwaxes (both Rudd and Bob) have a history with the
Make-A-Wish Foundation. Several times in the past, the wish to
meet the reigning Weatherwax Lassie has been granted to children
sponsored by this exceptional organization. During the days of this
event, Bob, Laddie, and Jon made many new friends and fans.
As always, Bob told hilarious stories of old Hollywood, Jon awed
visitors with his openness and genuine smile, and Laddie made
many a Baby Boomer's heart pulse faster in meeting the
9th generation of their childhood icon.

Bob, Laddie, and Jon even had their own special guest:
Sondra Thiederman, Ph.D. along with her husband Tom.
Sondra's father was Arthur Space, the actor who portrayed
Dr. Frank Weaver, the veterinarian, on the original Lassie
television series. Sondra is the author of the book,
Making Diversity Work:
Seven Steps for Defeating Bias in the Workplace.

Thanks to Ben Moraga and his staff for making
Bob and Laddie and Jon's wish come true in attending
this wonderful event.
