My  Dogs

by Michele Thomas

I loved watching the Lassie television show when I was a child;
it made me want a Collie. When I was 9 years old, my parents
did buy me a dog and I loved Skippy but he wasn't a Collie.
He was a Cardiganshire Welsh Corgi mix (the one with the tail).
My next dog wasn't a Collie either but a little black dog with
white on his chest and white paws. I named him Fritz. I was
told he might be half  Cocker spaniel/half Pekingese, but, in
looking through a book of dog breeds, I believed him to be a
Tibetan spaniel mix. Fritz was remarkable; he always
seemed to know what I wanted him to do. I never had to use
a leash. He just walked by my side. When I went out, he
walked between me and my date.

Finally, when I had my own family, I got as close to a Collie
as I've come. Like me, my daughter Sarah watched Lassie and
hoped to get a Collie, but we could find no breeders. Sargent
was the first of our three Shelties. Sargent was the perfect
puppy for us – the biggest yet very mellow, smart yet kind of
goofy. Still intent on shaping Sargent into a Collie, I bought
Bob Weatherwax's training tapes. A year later, Sargent's sister
Copper came to stay with us... and stayed permanently.
She learned a few commands but is sort of a mama's girl.

A few years later, we adopted Charlie-girl. She's got a few
issues but is smart in her own way. She once escaped from
the house when we weren't home and our neighbors were
caring for our dogs; in fact we had gone to my son's boot camp
graduation. That night was the coldest of the year,  but there
she was on our front porch waiting for us the next morning.
I felt so good that she thought of our home as hers, even
though she had only been with us for a few months.
